Rather than waiting for the best Black Friday jewellery bargains, you should keep your eye on any possible deals that occur in the build up to the 25 November. By doing this, it means that you won’t miss out on securing that engagement ring you’ve wanted to propose to your partner.

WHAT IS BLACK FRIDAY?

Black Friday is a shopping event that takes place the day after Thanksgiving on the last Friday of November. It’s one of the busiest shopping days of the year in both the United States and United Kingdom as retailers offer massive discounts on their products.

For retail businesses, who usually operate at a loss, would be able to generate a profit during the final week of November. The phrase ‘Black Friday’ comes from how accountants used black ink to highlight a profit for a business, compared to red ink for a loss.

More than half a century later, Black Friday crossed the Atlantic and came to the United Kingdom in 2010. Amazon took part in Black Friday in the UK when they promoted a range of discounts for their products for one day. Three years later, Black Friday took off in the UK as customers in ASDA fought in the aisles to grab heavily discounted deals on technology and other products.

Since then, Black Friday has become a major shopping event across many high street retailers in the UK.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF BLACK FRIDAY AND CYBER MONDAY

While Black Friday and Cyber Monday share similarities with one another, the histories of both shopping events are very different. We’ll look at the individual history of each shopping event, as well as how they became a major part of every November holiday season.

BLACK FRIDAY

The first thing that comes to mind with Black Friday is the mad dash of shoppers looking to grab a massively discounted bargain. The term Black Friday was first used on 24 September 1869, when it was used to explain the financial crash of the US gold market.  In the mid-20th century, Black Friday was used by the Philadelphia Police Department in the 1950’s to explain the chaos that happened the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Hordes of tourists and shoppers would come into Philadelphia for the annual Army-Navy American football game held annually every Saturday after the Thanksgiving holiday. This created issues for the police force, not only having to deal with traffic jams, but also huge crowds too.

It was not until the latter half of the 20th century, in the 1980s when Black Friday became commonly associated with Thanksgiving. Loss-making retailers would be able to make money during that one period of the year, which eventually spread into other countries, such as the UK.

CYBER MONDAY

Cyber Monday first originated in 2005, where the term was first used by Shop.org, a division of the National Retail Federation and is seen as an extension of Black Friday. This shopping event refers to the flurry of online shopping purchases made by customers on the Monday after Thanksgiving Day in the US.

In the UK, Cyber Monday took off at a similar time to when Black Friday first came to the UK in the 2010s. For online businesses, it’s the biggest online shopping day of the year as retailers offer various deals and discounts on electronics, jewellery, clothing and furniture.

The 2022 edition of Cyber Monday takes place on Monday 28 November 2022 as online retailers offer massive discounts on their products for 24 hours.

WHEN IS BLACK FRIDAY IN THE UK TAKING PLACE IN 2022?

The 13th edition of Black Friday in the UK will take place on Friday 25 November 2022, with many retailers offering discounts earlier on in November. The past couple of years saw people do their Black Friday shopping online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, although 2022 could be one of the biggest Black Fridays for in-store shopping in the UK to date.
