Topaz is a gemstone that ranks 8 on the Mohs scale. It comes in a wide range of colours, including colourless, yellow, orange, pink, red, brown and blue. It can grow to be much larger than most other gems, with a single crystal found in Brazil weighing over 270kg. Because larger stones are more common, they are much more affordable than other gemstones of similar weight.

Topaz is mined in many locations across the globe, with major production in Brazil, Russia, Pakistan, Nigeria and the USA. The rarest coloured topaz comes from Brazil and is famed for its orange-pink tones, reaching much higher prices than blue topaz.
