Morganite is a beautiful gem that belongs to the same family as emerald and aquamarine. It is popular for its romantic soft pink colouring, which displays different shades in varying lighting conditions and angles. Unlike other stones in its family, such as emeralds, morganite has only relatively recently been used in jewellery. It was discovered in 1910 by the chief gemologist at Tiffany & Co., George Kunz, in deposits in Madagascar. The stone was named after famous American financier J.P. Morgan, one of the few gemstones to bear a person's name, though, perhaps surprisingly, he never wore the jewel himself.
While the soft pink gem is most popular in a rose gold setting today, it was traditionally set in white gold and platinum throughout most of the 20th century.
Morganite is associated with love, compassion and emotional healing, thanks to its soft pink and peach hues. Linked to the heart chakra, it is said to attract and maintain love, making it an excellent choice for an engagement ring or a gift for a special loved one.
Morganite rates 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale, making it hard enough for daily wear. With no cleavage planes, it is resistant to chipping and splitting. It also tends to have a higher level of clarity than other gemstones at a similar price point.
Morganite is softer and more affordable than pink sapphire. Pink sapphire sits at 9 on the Mohs scale and commands a higher price, particularly in vivid or unheated examples.
