white gold or platinum for an engagement ring?

There is a lot of debate as to whether White gold or Platinum is the best metal for an engagement ring. Simply put, there are benefits to both. White Gold is slightly shinier than platinum, costs less, has great durability and is by far the most popular metal choice for engagement rings. However, Platinum has hypoallergenic properties, is naturally white so does not require future rhodium plating, is naturally harder than white gold, and weighs more meaning a higher price point. Whilst Platinum has a higher upfront cost, due to it not requiring rhodium plating in the future unlike white gold, the long term maintenance to ensure it looks its best is less. However, rhodium plating is not very expensive so white gold may be the best choice for those with a slightly smaller budget.

How to care for white gold engagement ring?

As mentioned above, White Gold will require Rhodium plating in the future to maintain it's white sheen. Rhodium is a high quality metal with the same colour of White Gold which a jeweller will dip an engagement ring in to ensure it's white shine is preserved for a few more years. Day-to-day care includes removing your engagement ring before handling any type of chemical or soap and storing in a soft pouch or jewellery box.

Which carat white gold is best for an engagement ring?

18ct gold is an alloy made up of 75% pure gold compared to 9ct gold which consists of 37.5% pure gold. Due to this, 18ct gold is more intense in colour due to the higher amount of gold present in the metal whereas 9ct may appear paler in colour in comparison. All of our white and yellow gold rings are 18ct gold to ensure they appear as vibrant as possible.
