Engagements During Christmas 2017

Engagements Over Christmas 2017

Last year, BrideBook predicted that 100,000 engagements would take place during Christmas 2017.

At Diamond Heaven, one of our favourite times of the year is Christmas. As soon as the Halloween decorations come down and the tinsel comes out, we know we're about to enter one of the most magical and romantic seasons of the year (aside from Valentine's Day of course). In the build-up to Christmas, people appreciate all that is around them and are thankful for the love and people in their life, so it's no surprise that it's also the most popular time of the year for loved-up couples to get engaged and start planning their dream wedding.

Last year, BrideBook predicted that 100,000 engagements would take place during Christmas 2017, with the majority of proposals happening on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th December 2017.  They also stated that the majority of proposals in 2016 took place in December, and it is easy to see why Christmas is full of betrothals. You're surrounded by friends and family, and Christmas is full of love, actually.

Engagement Trends During Christmas 2017

November and December saw a lot of people searching for a diamond engagement ring to gift to their other half, and we're not surprised. December saw a 3% increase in people visiting Diamond Heaven after Googling topics surrounding engagements, and the search volume for the term ‘engagement ring' increased by more than 5000% between November and December 2017 (Google Search Trends).

The public's search for Meghan Markle's engagement ring also dominated the diamond and jewellery industry on a global scale. People wanted to know all about her yellow gold trilogy ring featuring Princess Diana's diamonds, as well as a diamond from Botswana, (more than 700 people checked out our replica of Meghan Markle's engagement ring when it first went live). Following this trend, Christmas 2017 saw a spike in people searching for other Royal family member's engagement rings - you can find out more about that here.

Other Engagement Trends in 2017

The Pink Star Diamond Ring

During an auction in Hong Kong in April 2017, the world's most expensive ring and valuable gemstone sold for  $71.2 million. This sparkling pink rock, known as the ‘Pink Star' features a 59.60-carat pink diamond, and overtook The Oppenheimer Blue Diamond ring which auctioned for $57.7 million in 2016.

The Average Spend on an Engagement Ring is £1,650

Traditionally, the average spend on an engagement ring in the UK would be one month's wage (£1,990) if we followed the De Beers engagement ring spend tradition,  but the actual average cost of an engagement ring sits around the £1,650 mark (check out our survey here). Obviously, it is the thought that counts when it comes to getting down on one knee, and the amount you spend is entirely up to you. Find out more about the De Beers engagement ring spend myth here.

The Internet Slammed a Woman for Moaning About Her Engagement Ring

Following on from our above trend of engagement ring spend, the good people of the Internet slammed a seemingly ungrateful woman after she took to MumsNet to moan about the diamond solitaire engagement ring her fiance had gifted to her. You can see her complaint below.

Other MumsNet users went on to tell her she was ungrateful, with one user going as far as saying, "1300 quid is a lot of money to most people (I don't give a s**t how much he earns) and you sound like the worst person imaginable. I hope he dumps you".
