Metal

Choosing the correct metal is an important part of your purchase. Should you go for Platinum or White gold? Or maybe Rose Gold? All the key facts can be seen below.

Platinum

Platinum is the most popular metal used in Diamond Engagement Rings and Wedding Rings. Over 80% of our customers opt for Platinum as opposed to gold. Platinum is a naturally 100% white metal, it will never fade in colour. It also helps improve the sparkle and vibrancy of any diamond set in it.

The Purest Metal

Platinum is usually hallmarked ‘950’. This stands for 95% pure platinum then the other 5% will be palladium, iridium, ruthenium and other alloys. These help the platinum bond together forming a solid item. If it was not alloyed with another type it would simply be too weak.

As well as being one of the purest metals it is also the rarest. It is over 30 times more so than gold. Making it even more of a special purchase.

Gold

Gold has been used in jewellery for thousands of years; it has been used as ornaments by kings, as currency and more recently in electronics.

Gold’s Colour

The colour of gold is determined by the type of metal it is alloyed with, for example if it is alloyed with a silver coloured metal it will appear more white in appearance.

Yellow Gold

Natural gold is saturated with coloured alloys to give the beautiful rich colour. The most common alloy gold is mixed with to give its beautiful yellow hue are silver with a green hue and copper with a red hue. These then give the gold its natural warm look. Gold does not require any form of plating and will only dull down over time. To bring it back to its original condition it will just require a quick polish.

White Gold

Customers find white gold particularly appealing due to its white appearance and it’s slightly cheaper price as opposed to Platinum. White gold is mixed with a white alloy to give it a white hue. It is then rhodium plated to give a clean white finish. Rhodium plating will wear off over time, which can leave your jewellery with a yellow tint. This however can be re-applied by re-polishing the ring and re-applying the rhodium plating.

Rose Gold

The lovely pink hue that rose gold has is given by the copper alloy it is mixed with. This particular metal has seen a revival in the last year with many people deciding to have diamond engagement rings made in it. It gives the rings and jewellery a beautiful antique look and adds something different to your jewellery collection.

Carat Example

What is Carat?

A diamonds carat refers to the actual weight of a diamond, not the physical appearance. Each is split into points, a 1.00ct diamond will be 100 points and a 0.50ct will be 50 points and so on.

We always recommend trying different carat weights to get a better idea of what suits you best, it’s also important to consider the clarity and colour of a diamond while doing this. For example you may decide you would prefer a higher quality diamond with a smaller carat weight.

For more in depth information on carat visit our education section here.

Clarity Example

What is Clarity?

The clarity of a diamond refers to how many inclusions or imperfections a diamond has. A diamond with less inclusions will sparkle more, meaning it will be a higher grade and will be more valuable. Almost all diamonds include a small trace of carbon, the element from which they were born. These inclusions occur naturally when a diamond is formed, most are not visible to the naked and will need to be viewed under 10x magnification.

For more in depth information on clarity visit our education section here.

Colour Example

What is Colour?

The colour grading of a diamond actually refers to how colourless it is. For example a D colour diamond will be colourless, thus having a white appearance. An H colour diamond will be graded as near colourless, visually it will appear less white than a D colour. However you will commonly only see a vast difference in the diamonds when comparing them next to each other. We only sell diamonds within the colourless and near colourless grades.

For more in depth information on Colour visit our education section here.

Cut

What is Cut?

Cut is an important characteristic to consider when purchasing a diamond, it will ultimately govern how well the light will be refracted; giving the diamond its sparkle. If you purchase a poor cut diamond (not sold at diamond heaven), it will not refract the light as well and will not sparkle. A poor cut diamond will also have a smaller spread, meaning you will get a smaller visual appearance from your selected carat weight.

We source only good, very good and excellent cut diamonds. By looking at the diagram above you will see how an excellent cut diamond will give you the best sparkle, very good cut refracts a large amount of the light and good cut refracts a little less. Rest assured any of these cut grades will give you a beautiful sparkle.

We would thoroughly recommend using Diamond Heaven. We ordered 2 rings and are so happy with the finished products, my engagement ring and wedding ring are truly beautiful, I cried when received. I was anxious spending such a lot of money without seeing the rings but need not have been. The service throughout has been first class, all questions answered, and there were quite a few, and regular updates on our order. Thank you so much, we will be back!
